CRUSO, N.C. (WLOS) – As storm clean up continues in Haywood County the focus is now turning to the flood ravaged Pigeon River. More than a thousand truckloads of debris from last summer’s flood have been hauled from roadsides and off to a Haywood County landfill. Now, Haywood County officials said the river debris clean up process is beginning, including clearing out branches, even entire trees that were pushed into the Pigeon River during the August flood. The goal is to remove jams that could exaggerate flooding, causing damage to roads, bridges and structures. Officials said debris clean up is a process that will take weeks, months and maybe even years.
