Haywood County is taking a big bite out of the local drug trade

HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) – Haywood County is taking a big bite out of the local drug trade. A recent undercover drug raid took more than $200,000 worth of illegal drugs out of Western North Carolina and netted police multiple arrests. It was a coordinated effort by law enforcement that led to a successful outcome and focused on known drug traffickers in or around the Cherokee reservation. Dubbed ‘Operation Casino Royale,’ it involved 17 law enforcement agencies in the mountains and 115 officers. Police arrested 98 suspects, and confiscated over 1,000 grams of meth, 555 grams of fentanyl, more than 2,400 grams of marijuana, illicit pills, cocaine, guns and thousands in cash were also recovered.

Cherokee police handled a fatal overdose on the reservation during the execution of search warrants in the investigation, and said a two-year-old child later tested positive for fentanyl.
