A new school is set to come to town and area leaders are also hoping an affordable housing concept they championed at last week’s board meeting will get the greenlight. The Sylva town board had to vote to change the zoning for a potential 48-unit affordable housing development on Savannah Drive. Four housing developments have been planned for the space but never won the tax credit to make it possible. Developers apply for the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit, with one in five getting the award, and rural applicants have an even harder time, officials said. The good news for Sylva is that the awards are granted by need, and Jackson County made the top 10 list of the state’s 100 counties most in need of affordable housing, it was noted. The proposal passed unanimously.
