[sylva herald] The name of a local elderly woman killed Sunday afternoon in a two car crash in front of Cookout on East Main Street has been made public. Martha Jane Winecoff Brethauer, 89, of the Savannah Ridge Community, died at the scene of the accident, in which her 87 year old husband, Melvin, who was driving, turned in front of another vehicle, causing the collision, according to N.C. Highway Patrol reports. The other driver, a 21 year old man, and his 19 year old passenger were injured and taken to area hospitals. Melvin Brethauer is in the ICU at Mission, but is improving, one of his daughters said. No charges have been filed.
