Hiker rescued after medical emergency in Great Smoky Mountains National Park

An Alabama man had to be rescued while hiking in Great Smoky Mountains National Park Friday morning [April 22]. The park’s Emergency Communications Center received notification that Michael Elmore, 74, was experiencing severe chest pains while hiking the Appalachian Trail near Fontana Lake. Multiple agencies assisted, including the National Park Service, Graham County EMS, Swain County Search and Rescue and the North Carolina Forest Service, in bringing the injured hiker to safety and he was taken to Mission Hospital in Asheville for treatment.
