A COVID-19 free testing site will soon be opening up in Haywood County. The county has been working for weeks to find a provider that will offer testing, but officials say the labor shortage has caused delays. Although an exact date has yet to be announced, the clinic is expected to open sometime this month, according to a news release.

Local hospitals are still reeling from the holiday surge as new daily COVID cases, jumped from a dozen or so a day around Christmas to nearly 50 a day over the weekend, and that has increased the concern about overwhelming healthcare facilities. Haywood’s most recent COVID surge started in late December and is rapidly going up, with 158 new cases over the three-day New Year’s weekend.
