Three dozen Haywood County Schools positions were eliminated

Three dozen Haywood County Schools positions were eliminated at the end of the 2022-23 school year, from custodians to central office staff, after a budget deficit forced tough decisions from school leaders. Trevor Putnam, superintendent for Haywood County Schools says, they’ve eliminated approximately 36 positions based on the revenue stream, and were able to absorb those cuts through resignations and retirements. The need for position cuts comes after the school district experienced a decrease in student enrollment over the past three years. Fewer students meant less money from county, state and federal funding sources, which are all based on enrollment.
The decline in students left the school system with a $2 million budget deficit this year.
