Bogus banking scam led to Brevard man losing $15,000

BREVARD, N.C. (WLOS) – Residents are being warned about a bogus banking alert that led to a Brevard man losing $15,000. On June 1 he received a text message claiming to come from Bank of America about a potentially fraudulent Zelle payment in the amount of $7,500 and he immediately cancelled the transfer. However, when he got a call to confirm the cancellation he somehow was conned into sending two $7,500 payments. It’s called an impersonation scam, according to the Better Business Bureau (BBB). If you believe you were a victim of this con you’re urged to file a police report, or you can contact the Federal Trade Commission.
