Sylva’s Planning Board considers rezoning for private school and affordable housing

Sylva’s Planning Board is considering rezoning that could bring a private school to Skyland Drive and a 48-unit multi-family complex to Savannah Drive. The two zoning amendments would affect three seven-acre parcels, two of which CJ Properties is asking the town to rezone for a K-8 private school on Skyland, current home of Great Smoky Mountain Fitness Center. And, over on Savannah Drive between Nicol Arms Apartments and Parris Cemetery, applicants are hoping the town approves a 48-unit mix of affordable housing for Sylva residents who earn less than 60 percent of the median income for Jackson County, that will be available to folks like local teachers, county/city employees, fire and police officers, etc.

The planning board will consider a request to close part of Pathfinder Lane, a single-lane gravel road that runs along N.C. 107, between Walter Ashe Road and Hallie Manor Court. Pathfinder was a, what is called, “paper street,” laid out on paper in the 1920s or ’30s reserved for potential development.
