CANTON, N.C. (WLOS) – The shutdown of the Pactiv Evergreen plant in Canton is less than a month away and challenges continue to emerge. The company wants to reduce the paper mill’s assessed value by millions, and workers are facing confusion over health insurance. Canton Mayor Zeb Smathers said a tax break for Pactiv Evergreen would translate into millions less for town services like police, fire and water. Pactiv Evergreen has requested a meeting for June 2 in the Waynesville library. The public is welcome to attend.
MEANWHILE…
On the issue of health insurance for workers, Smathers said, HCC will host two all-day sessions Tuesday and Wednesday with Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina to help employees navigate options.
