Severe storms ripped through Haywood County leaving downed trees and power outages in its wake

Crews spent the weekend restoring power lines and repairing poles after a wind storm accompanied by torrential rains ripped through Haywood County Friday evening, leaving downed trees and power outages in its wake. More than 1,600 Duke Energy customers lost power, and over 2,000 Haywood EMC customers, along with a couple hundred Waynesville power customers were also left without electricity. Phone, cable and internet outages were also a result of downed lines. Some customers still remained without internet and cable Sunday.
