A scam targeting people looking for work is circulating in the area. The Better Business Bureau is warning job seekers to beware of an increase in employment scams, in which you apply for work you saw online or may have heard advertised on the radio and the fake company will try and get you to pay for equipement or work to gain personal informaiton. The BBB recently released its 2022 Scam Tracker Risk Report, and while online purchase scams maintained the top spot as the riskiest, employment scams were reportedly up 23.1 percent from 2021 to 2022, marking the second riskiest con. The Sylva Police Department has not received reports of employment scams, but it was noted that these job schemes aren’t always reported. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office have yet to receive a jobs scheme complaint. Victims may reach out to local law enforcement or JCSO to report scams.
