CANTON, N.C. (WSPA) – More details are emerging about the closing of one of the largest employers in Haywood County. Pactiv Evergreen announced plans Monday to close their paper mill in Canton, saying that the decision is part of a restructuring. The company said in an update that they will “explore strategic alternatives” for their facility in Waynesville. The shutdown in Canton and reduction in Waynesville will happen this summer. A company spokesperson said severance benefits will be provided to help those who now have to find a new job. The company currently employs more than 1,000 people in Haywood County, according to the Haywood County Chamber of Commerce.
MEANWHILE….
Many in the town are devastated and emotional over the news. The plant has been in operation for more than 100 years and after seeing many residents in tears, Canton Mayor Zeb Smathers likened the closure to taking a piece of the town’s soul. He said the news came out of nowhere, and no one was prepared. Smokey Mountain Local 507 President Troy Dills said when he asked about the future of the facility during a meeting with company officials he was told they did not intend to tear down the plant. The mayor said, however, he does not know if another mill will open there.
