Last weeks storms knocked down trees and power lines in Jackson County

Last weeks (Jan. 3) storms knocked down trees and power lines in Jackson County, but caused little other damage, officials said. About half an inch of rain fell over six hours, and Jackson County Emergency Services Director Todd Dillard said there was some wind damage reported in the Savannah community and around Sylva, with the worse recorded in the northern end of the county. There was a report of flooding at the Laurel Oaks apartments located near the Cullowhee Fire Department on Little Savannah Road, but he high winds on Tuesday left little to no damage in Sylva, according to Public Works Director Jake Scott.

ON THE OTHER HAND…

December’s Christmas deep freeze kept the Tuckaseigee Water and Sewer Authority busy, as they worked to cope with service disruptions from customers frozen pipes or failed systems. While customer line breaks did not interrupt widespread water supply, TWSA officials said nearby homes were dealing with pressure and flow issues due to the frigid temps. TWSA estimates they answered more than 40 calls from both customers and emergency management and had to bring in extra staff to meet increased water needs.
