The Cullowhee volunteer fire department is bidding adieu to a longtime member. After 50 years with the department, L.G. Painter is hanging up his boots. The 76 year old became a volunteer firefighter at age 25. The fire department gave Painter a plaque and a watch for his retirement, as well as some tractor equipment. He holds the record as the longest serving volunteer firefighter.
