Sylva Fire Chief Mike Beck is thinking outside the box to fund hiring more personell for the department. More bodies in turnout gear are needed to keep up with the increases, and Beck said the department recently paid off one of its trucks, leaving money in the budget and he wants to use that, along with the money the county is currently paying on the building to increase staff by three. The county has been paying about $150,000 per year on the SFD building and would have it paid off at the end of 2024. Plans are about a year out, possibly to be implemented in July of 2024.
