HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) – An elderly NC woman killed while trying to cross a highway in Western North Carolina over the weekend has been identified. According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP), Laura W. Haberneck, of Spruce Pine, North Carolina, was crossing US-19 (Dellwood Road) in Haywood County from Lake Junaluska to the campground Saturday afternoon [Oct. 15], when a pickup truck driven by 68-year-old William T. Mayes, of South Carolina, hit the 71 year old. She died from her injuries prior to arriving at the hospital. The driver of the pickup truck was uninjured and NCSHP says no charges have been issued concerning the incident.
