SWAIN COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) – A man accused of stealing a vehicle from a gas station and leading police on a high-speed chase has been sentenced to more than a decade behind bars. According to a press release from the District Attorney’s office, James Caviness accepted a plea deal in connection to the June 23, 2020 incident in which he stole a pickup truck that was idling, prompting a police pursuit that began in Bryson City and ended about 30-minutes later in a restaurant parking lot. A Swain County Superior Court judge recently ordered the 52 year old to serve a maximum of 13 years in prison.
