The newest social media trend has area law enforcement on high alert. The Kia Boyz sensation allegedly inspired people to steal cars, specifically certain cars manufactured by Kia and Hyundai that have proven vulnerable to a particular hack. So far, Jackson County does not seem to have fallen prey to the trend, Chief Deputy Matt Wike said. The thieves break into cars made by the two manufacturers and use a screwdriver to pry the cover from the steering column. They then use a USB phone charging cable to start the engine and drive away. Sometimes the thieves crash the car in the process. Push to start cars are not prone to the hack.
