Republican proposal to make school board elections in Haywood County partisan causing pushback

A Republican proposal to change the school board elections in Haywood County to partisan is causing some pushback from both sides of the isle. During a recent [May 24] Board of Aldermen meeting, a resolution was presented opposing House Bill 998, which if passed would make all elections in Haywood County partisan. In a story published by The Smoky Mountain News on May 20, a total of 16 elected officials from the county’s four municipalities, including some Republicans, went on record as being against the switch, including the entire governing boards of Canton and Waynesville.
