It was a group effort to keep kids safe after threat at East Elementary

It was a group effort to keep kids safe Thursday morning after a suspected weapon was reported at East Elementary School. It all started when a student told a teacher about a classmate potentially having a weapon, and the teacher notified the principal, who contacted the SRO and the school was placed on lockdown during the investigation as a precautionary measure. The School Resource Officer confiscated an airsoft gun in a students backpack and the lockdown, and perimeter lockdown of Swain County Schools, was lifted and all activities returned to normal. The investigation into the incident by Swain County Schools is ongoing.
