Fatal fiery crash shuts down US-74 in Jackson County

JACKSON COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) – One person was killed in a fiery crash that temporarily closed both directions of US-74 in Jackson County on Monday afternoon. According to state troopers, the driver of an SUV, for unknown reasons, crossed the median and was hit by an oncoming tractor-trailer hauling garbage. The tractor-trailer ran off the road, and the garbage caught fire. Troopers said the driver of the tractor-trailer was airlifted to an area hospital for injuries sustained in the wrong way wreck. The SUV driver, identified as, Marquetta Alvarado, 65, of Whittier, was pronounced dead at the scene.
