CANTON, N.C. (WLOS) – North Carolina towns can charge a special tax for road maintenance, but given economic hardships, town leaders are rejecting the idea. Because of the pandemic, inflation, and flooding that impacted the region last year, Canton’s mayor says now is not the time to make drivers pay for a $30 per vehicle tax to fix the roads. He says he pays county and town taxes and doesn’t want another one. For now, the mayor says the vehicle tax is off the table as the town waits for a better economy, adding, town leaders will continue to look for creative ways to finance fixing up potholes not too far down the road.
