Fire forces Madison County jail to evacuate

MADISON COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) – The Madison County jail had to evacuate after an electrical fire broke out Sunday [March 6]. According to a press release from the Sheriff’s office, around 80 inmates were immediately transferred and family members were notified of the situation. No injuries were reported. 65 inmates were taken to the Buncombe County Detention Center and juvenile inmates were sent to an undisclosed location. Officials are hoping the jail will be able to reopen this week.
