Sylva man who survived fatal wrong way collision continuing to recover

A Sylva man who survived a fatal wrong way collision is continuing to recover. Joseph Patrick Stephans was “sitting up talking,” according to his wife, who said this week that her husband’s memory of the events is fuzzy, and he has a long road ahead of him. A Bryson City woman was killed in the crash on U.S. 23/74 after driving her 2000 Isuzu Rodeo westbound in the eastbound lane near Skyland Drive, and hitting Stephans car head on. Connie Jean Martin, 64, died on scene, according to reports. The couple have set up a GoFundMe campaign to help with hospital and medical costs.
