The Cherokee community has seen the highest number of new COVID-19 cases reported in January 2022
out of any month since the pandemic began. As of Jan. 19 more than 450 new cases were recorded, which beat the record in August 2021 which saw 349 cases, according to the EBCI (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians) Joint Information Center (JIC). The current surge is being blamed on the Omicron variant which health officials say is highly contagious
