Candidate filing for North Carolina’s 2022 primary elections will resume next month

Candidate filing for North Carolina’s 2022 primary elections will resume Feb. 24, and end at noon on Friday, March 4, under an order issued Tuesday by the Superior Court of Wake County. The order clearing the way for the filing period to begin was handed down by a three-judge panel that upheld state legislative and congressional district maps that were being challenged in redistricting-related lawsuits.

A separate court ruling has temporarily halted a lawsuit challenging U.S. Rep. Madison Cawthorn’s eligibility for office. The lawsuit suggests that Cawthorn, a candidate for North Carolina’s 13th Congressional District, aided the deadly Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection disqualifying him from federal office. The N.C. Board of Elections was planning to appoint a panel to hear the challenge against Cawthorn during a meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 12, but that meeting was canceled in light of the Tuesday order.
