MAGGIE VALLEY, N.C. (WLOS) – If you were hoping to spend New Year’s day on the slopes you may be out of luck. December’s spring-like weather has made it difficult to keep snow on the slopes at Cataloochee in Maggie Valley, and with the above normal temperatures Cataloochee Ski Area officials made the decision to temporarily close down operations due to the warmer than normal weather which is causing the snow to melt. The ski area closed Thursday, Dec. 30 and the slopes are expected to reopen Monday morning, Jan. 3, 2022.
