Haywood County’s economy continues to recover. According to North Carolina’s ranking system that evaluates counties based on four economic factors, including it’s unemployment rate, median household income, population growth, and assessed property value, Haywood remained in the Tier 2 category that it slipped to in the 2021 rankings. The State’s counties are designated as Tier 1, 2, and 3, with the most economically distressed counties in Tier 1. David Francis, who oversees economic development in the county, said their tier 2 ranking allows them more Federal Funding which is helpful as they contnue to pick up the pieces following the pandemic.
