Construction could soon start at the intersection of Josephine Street and Dillsboro Road in Sylva, but not for living quarters. St. Mary’s Mother of God Catholic Church hopes to build a cemetery adjacent to the church.
Currently, there is no Catholic cemetery in Jackson County. The proposed cemetery has been in the works at St. Mary’s for a number of years.
MEANWHILE…
Some neighboring residents have experessed concerns about the cemetery with some saying it will be an eysore and have a negative effect on property values. Increased traffic is also a concern, as is contamination, some residents said. The church hopes to build an approximate 5,500 square foot cemetery and says the site does not breach any other property. Church leaders will host their neighbors at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church to hear from them and share the proposal in more detail. The Sylva Town Board will take up the issue at their Dec. 2 meeting.
