Installation of Cowee 19 memorial slowly moving forward

The Jackson County NAACP effort to install a marker memorializing the Cowee 19 is slowly moving forward. The Cowee 19 are 19 men aged 15 to 55 who died in a horrific 1882 railroad construction accident. The NAACP is finalizing the application to the N.C. Department of Transportation asking that the state install an official marker honoring the tragic loss of life. Those involved in the effort have drafted an information brochure which they hope to have printed and distributed across the county by year’s end.
