A Western Carolina University professor is rallying for ‘social justice’ change. Katy Allen, assistant professor of Social Work at WCU, along with the school’s Crimiman Justice department, is researching ways a social work position might improve policing. The study promotes the concept of having a social worker on board at the Sylva Police Department. To that end, grant funding has allowed WCU to create an intern position to gather data on what the program would look like and how officers’ have been helped and the positive impacts on the community, to determine if a permanent position would be of benefit.
