Recent rains led to several car accidents in Jackson County

Wet weather last week [Oct. 7] led to several car accidents in Jackson County, including one incident on U.S. 23/74 when a tree fell across the highway near exit 83. According to a release, a trooper responded to the scene and struck the same tree, resulting in several thousand dollars worth of damages. There were no injuries reported. The Sylva Fire Department came out and cut the rest of the tree up.

MEANWHILE…

Heavy rain and high water canceled classes at Blue Ridge Early College last week and Blue Ridge School. Officials said a culvert under Bobcat Drive partially washed out, causing water to seep into the elementary school building. The school remained closed Friday, officials said, while a temporary structure was built over the culvert. No one was injured.

AND…

On the way to check on flooding at two local schools, Jackson County Director of Emergency Management Director Todd Dillard was involved in a minor traffic accident when his emergency services vehicle struck an ambulance responding to an incident on Helen Zachary Road.
