CRUSO, N.C. (WLOS) – ‘I went under and the current just got me.’ That’s what a Haywood County woman said after she was swept away by floodwaters last week and lived to tell her story of survival. Michelle Rice’s home off U.S. 276 in Cruso took a direct hit from Tropical Storm Fred, and as she and her dog tried to escape rising waters, Rice was carried away in the flood. The flooding at Rice’s home was more than 5 feet high. Miraculously, she walked away with only scratches and bruises.
In the meantime…
The nonprofit Helping Haywood is responding to the hardest-hit areas with supplies and other resources. In less than a week, the organization has raised close to $100,000 to help those in need.
