Crews continue to work to find residents missing after severe storms

Between Wednesday and Thursday Over 200 search and rescue missions were accomplished by hundreds of Swift Water rescue and fire departments from all over the state of North Carolina, with 2 confirmed fatalities so far in the search process. Around 20 people are still missing as of Thursday evening. Rescue efforts continue from multiple agencies. Governor Roy Cooper said the state was helping with trying to find individuals.

Local and State entities are working to provide hotel rooms for the misplaced residence. Cooper said the
state wanted to get a major disaster declaration to allow for funding and more resources. The declaration would depend on the final assessments.

Cooper said when the community builds back, building back resiliently would be key using the latest structural codes and materials. Canton Mayor Jeb Smather’s said Gov. Cooper and state officials wereworking well together to provide immediate needs. Such as bottled water, food and cleaning
supplies. Chuck Francis; Chairman of the Haywood County School Board spoke about the
damage to the new artificial turf field at Pisgah Memorial Stadium.
